Mentor program

PIKA’s mentor program connects new members to experienced members (the mentors) who assist the new members to learn the ways of the club, such as what kayaks and associated gear are acceptable, PIKA’s safety guidelines, the trip classification system, what training is available, what the new member’s current skill level is and how to signup for a trip, to name a few.

Mentors are not necessarily qualified instructors although some are. Their goal is to enable new members to become confident yet cautious paddlers who make informed decisions regarding which trips they join, which gear they acquire and how to develop their paddling skills while having a safe and enjoyable time.

Typical interactions that mentors can offer new members include the following:

  • Answer new member’s questions by email and/or phone
  • Review the Paddler Guidelines document
  • Review the trip calendar, trip classifications and what a trip facilitator does
  • Review training opportunities with PIKA and with other local providers
  • Discuss PIKA’s approach to safety on a trip such as 3-person rule and required re-entry skills.
  • Meet up to review new member’s gear and go on a short paddle together.
  • Discuss the benefits of attending PIKA social meetings
  • Tour the PIKA website by a Zoom meeting
